Trail Description

Our group set out for a day of exploring the Shasta-Chappie ohv area today. Our plans were to stay in the lower foothills due to unusually low snow levels this winter. After some discussion and mapping we decided on trail #2 Coreshack Rd. This trail begins as a fork off Westside Rd. on the shores of Lake Shasta. The trail guided us up a winding ridge offering some great vistas of Lake Shasta and Shasta Dam to the north and the Sacramento River Valley to the south. After topping this ridge we swept west toward the Squaw Creek canyon. Things begin to get moderately challenging as the trail begins to hug the steep canyon walls with the creek far below. We encountered lots of small stream crossings and much more snow than we expected at this elevation. The crossing and snow combined to give us bit of a challenge in some spots where traction was less than desired. In my opinion this trail is more about getting out and enjoying the sights and nature than it is challenging your off-road skills. However Coreshack can be used as a jumping off point for some of the more challenging trails in the area. Just check your map to see what trails intersect and where. So bottom line… if you want to get out and see some beautiful creeks, abandoned mineshafts, and vistas of the local area this is the trail for you. If you want something more challenging there are many choices right in the same area.
