Trail Description

I made it home at the time the run was going to start. I began in Red Bluff and decided that I was going to try and catch anyone out there. The run was to start in Paynes Creek and end in Red Bluff. I just ran up Hogsback. I got a hold of Shawn on the C.B. around the shooting range and I flew to the end of Hogsback to meet up with him. Yes Hogsback was made in just less than 1 hour.

Any hoo... Shawn and I were the sole Trail Hunters on the run. On the way I passed a group of guys on Hogsback with some tricked out rigs. Fact on of them has been in the "Top Truck Challenge" Remember the Rust colored Full Size Bronco? After chatting to them a second it was back to the trail... We made our way over to a mud pit and got some goo on the rigs so we looked kewl and set a plan of attack. We headed out the Panther trail till. This is a mild, curvy trail with some loose ground. The time of year made the trail slippery but easy run. Any vehicle with minimal ground clearance can make this run. Then we arrived at the Trail head for the Peligreen Jeep trail.

Upon arrival it is obvious that the trail is meant only for 4x4s. The first decent into the canyon was wet, rocky and slightly challenging. The wet rocks and the descent made for some interesting times. The trial is narrow with a hill on one side and a cliff on the other. Fact much of the trial is this way and would intimidate someone scared of heights. Use of ground clearance and good driving skill is a must for this run. I would say four wheel drive is required for this also. The trail consists of rocks, mud, then rocks and more mud. Yet once on top of the Peligreen Jeep Trail the scenery is fabulous. At times you can look in any direction and not see civilization. Stunning hill tops and cloud lines made for an elegant view. Lots of the run are this way and would be good to bring everything you need for a long stay incase of the worst.

We then Ran over the Grapevine Jeep Trail to Ishi Road. Along this path are some great hill climbs and descents. The Trail is also filled with some challenging stuff that might be challenging for some. We came back through the Facht Place Campgrounds where we run back into the group I ran into earlier in the day. After what was the most challenging hill climb of the day we were back on Hogsback. Splashing through the numerous water puddles for this time of year was fun. With only some minor electrical problems on my end the damage report is slim to none. The Trail... This will be taken on again. There is prime wheeling to be had on this run. The day also was filled with deer and some other wild life to be seen and tons of elegant views. I was unable to get a mileage. Yet the run itself took us around five hours.

Directions: Exit I5 in Red Bluff at Antelope and turn east. At the end of town is a left turn to Mt Lassen via Hwy 36. Take that about 15 miles to Paynes Creek and take the only exit there. Drive about 20 miles and you'll be at the trail head.
