Well, this thread is probably going to go slow, but I figure I might as well post up. Last weekend, rwilley and I started the diesel FJ40 build.

The Plan:

3.0 LT Mercedes OM617 I5 Turbo Diesel
Advance Adapters Ranger Overdrive
Toyota 4-Speed Transmission
19-Spline Toyota Split Transfer Case
Toyota Axles - Four Wheel Disc Brakes
Power Steering

Last weekend we were able to get some motor mounts fabricated, and the transmission/transfer case together. We also started on removing the old motor mounts. Hopefully we will be able to get the motor positioned this weekend and the new mounts welded on the frame.

Enough said...Here are some pictures...

The motor came out of a 1984 Mercedes Benz 300D car.

It probably won't be on the trail for a while. We are just trying to get a start, and get the motor mounts placed for now. I have to admit that this rig may not see very much trail time. I am wanting to build a street rig that gets decent fuel mileage. I am also wanting to see how this motor runs in a land cruiser. I believe that it might be a little under-powered for a wheeling rig, but figure it will be fine for a street rig with smaller tires. I just think it will be cool to have one of these early turbo diesel engines in a land cruiser. It seems like the right size, weight, and price to be effective, but I am just concerned about power.

Hey Mike, I have recently run across an FJ40 pickup! It wouldnt be cheap but it seems to be a good builder! If your interest is peaked let me know!
