My daily driver (and tow rig for the Beeest) is a completely stock 99 GMC Sierra Z71. Over the last few days the power steering has gone away but only when turning right.
I would assume if the pump or box was going bad It would be stiff both directions.

Any ideas?

My guess would be the box. Sounds like the valve that senses when you turn the wheel and and makes the assist start to happen isn't working.

That is the best way to describe it I guess!!!!

Generally the pump has no control over the direction you turn. If it turns one way alright but no the other, i would lean towards the box. If it didn't turn either way then maybe the pump.

Just my 2cents

That was my thought too.

So I'm probably looking at new box.

Thanks FJ40Rob but I did some checking and an 87 wont work. Mine bolts on the inside of the frame and Has to be from a 99-2005 PU or 2001-2003 Burb. Called around and the price for reman box ranges from 600+ at GMC  to 200 at Franklin.

Looks like the Beeest is gonna have to wait on some of its new stuff.

half tons are inside the frame and both 3/4 ton and 1 tons are outside the box IIRC

Pick n Pull has a bunch of them boxes. IIRC there are two main spline counts. You could check yours and go find one that matches for about 50 bucks (about $25 on a half price day).

Your particular part number may only match the vehicles you mentioned, camero's , malibu's, etc. all have the model that bolt inside the frame, the difference may be the number of turns to lock from center. The only other differences I know of are that most boxes are 3 bolt while only some are 4 bolt.

I believe there is a rebuild kit available for that box. It may not be the 'best' way to fix the problem, but if you rebuild it then at least you'll know how.

If by "take care of it" you mean I can stand by and watch, I'm there!! :whistling:

JK, I could use the help though, thanks Frank. I'm in the middle of moving and my garage is split between two houses. :wallbash: My tool box is at the new house but the juke box is at the old one.

I have to take my nephew back to Oregon on Saturday, but I can make that a day trip and be there Sunday. Let me check the check book tonight and I will let you know for sure by tomorrow morning.

Do they have it in stock? Franklin would have to order it and that would take a few days.

I was gonna say something about leaving this a street truck cause I have the buggy to play in, but last Saturday the truck would have gotten me further up the road.

Lifting the Beeest will be next weekend.
