Hi guys,

For a start, I am completely new to the FJ40 scene, so appoligies if i have some dumb questions

I have recently been lucky enough to pick up an original 1 owner 1979 Fj40 with less than 100k on the clock (I work in yemen)

The vehicles is currently fitted with an F2 engine but comes with the original f series engine and 3 speed box as per Saudi spec for '79.

The vehicle is document as one owner - I have met the guy the payed for it in Saudi and imported to Yemen 3 days later.

It does not need alot of work, i am not fussed about keeping it original, but want something to fill the time with

I have a couple of questions all of wich might be dumb

1. Local mechanic say they can fit a 5 speed gear box to fit the f2 engine with no problems - is this true?

2. How easily is it to fit front disc brakes?

3. As the vehicle is '79 how hard will it be to fit power stearing?

On a completely seperate point - as bodies are cheap here and i have a rolled discovery 1 with the v8 and an auto box - has anybody fitted a Fj40 body to an disco chassic? only asking because labour is $1 an hour here and to me that seem possible

If anybody wants help sourcing part / vehicles give me a shout i will be happy to help out

Hey, Welcome to 4x4 Trail Hunters. Well I am not sure what vehicles you have at your disposal for parts for certain conversions. To my knowledge you have limited options for 5-Speed Transmissions. www.sor.com would be your best bet, to get a 5-speed that will mount up properly. Disc brakes are a rather easy conversion. I am not sure if you have Toyota Pickup trucks over there, but they are equipped with front disc brakes, and their setup with transfer over to the Land Cruiser Axle. You just need the toyota pickup outer axles and birfields. What is typically done for power steering is taking a Saginaw Power Steering box off a 70's & 80's large Chevy Car. A hole is cut in the front of the frame and the power steering is mounted to the front of the frame. I am not sure if you have a large chevy car selection to choose from. In the 1974 Cruiser I have, I am using a International Scout II power steering box from the mid to late 1970s. This mounts on the top of the frame in about the middle of the front fender. You might also take a look at the FJ62 power steering boxes. I am guessing that your cruiser is right hand drive, which makes a lot of what I just told you irrelevant because your steering setup is on the opposite side as ours.

I am interested in getting an FJ45 pickup. I do not know the possibility of pulling that off, but I wouldn't mind doing some research on seeing what it would take.

It's my understanding that the toyota LC 5spd bolts to the split t/case and not to a 3spd t/case (at least not without an adapter). So, you may well be able to bolt it to your 2f engine but I don't know if it will bolt to your t/case (and don't think it will).

2. How easily is it to fit front disc brakes?

I'm surprised your 79 doesn't have front disc brakes. In the USA fj40's came with disc brakes in the front after 75 (I've heard some 75's had them). Like MWilley said, you can take either fj40 front disc knuckles or toyota pickup knuckles and transfer them to your front axle. Take everthing from the birfields outwards. You may have to remove some material from the inside top and bottom flat spots in your outer axle housing balls as the newer birfields are slightly larger ...or the older housing is slightly smaller, I forget which.

3. As the vehicle is '79 how hard will it be to fit power stearing?

I've noticed a lot of ads promoting the toyota pickup power steering conversion.

Never heard of that but anything is possible. Reasonable is another thing, are the wheelbases close? Is the discovery auto box cable operated? If not, will your shifter come up in the right location? To approximate measure top of the front tire of both rigs back parallel to where the shifters come up. Depending on whether you keep your heater stock 4 or 5 inches difference may be ok.

Thanks, I'm looking for fj80 axles, front and back, with e-lockers

Welcome to Trailhunters.

I am very surprised to hear that a 79 fj40 does not have power steering and front disk brakes. And here they also came with 4 speed transmissions 1979. The newer modle fj62 came with a 5 speed with a low 1st gear but you may need to change the transfer case also to make it mount up. Tell us exactly what you want to do and we may be able to take a few pics and give you step by step instuctions. Good luck.

Hi,

Thanks for all the advice - will have no problems finding Toyota Pick-up brakes and parts off of a FJ62

Does any one have a way of checking the age of a vehicle

Chassis No. 306044, Engine 369096

FJ45 pick-ups are plentiful and start at about $3k - the only issue is that they have all had a hard life and are still working to this day. I will take some pics to show you what you get for your money

As for other spares, will post the contact details of the main breaker in town - will ask about the axles today

Is that right hand or left and drive? I think there may be a market for some rear axles out of those rigs. I am not sure how many you can get your hands on, but in the U.S. we did not have full-floating rears, they were all semi-floaters. Many cruiser owners would like to have one.

My plans are

1. Get the body work sorted and sprayed yellow
2. refurbish the interior
3. Fit front disk breaks - will look into sourcing Hi-Lux parts
4. Fit power steering - will look into sourcing FJ62 parts
5. Fit any gearbox other than the current 3 speed - would preferably like an auto - realistically can only opt for parts from Toyotas - open to all options (currently fitted with an F2 engine

that rear looks like a full floating axle.

Is the transfer case vacuum operated? (does it have a FWD pull/push switch on the dashboard?)

What kind of 4 wheeling will you be doing?

Hi Guys

Update - on work so far

The H55F gear box is in, as are the front brake and the powersteering. There is still a little play to work out in both the gear box and the steering, but it is a vast impovement on the original

The above work with a set of manual locking hubs and a recon' steering colum cost $2300

Now off to fabrication shop for a roll bar, front and rear bumper - the original spare wheel rack will be mounted to the rear bumper, the larger rear lights for a 70 series pick up will also be mounted in the bumper

After that it will head of the the bodyshop - over the month they will strip it down to metal, fix the 5 rust spots, weld in a replacement rear floor and spray it - quote i for $1000, but will probably be near $1300 when its all done with new seals etc

Wagon cost $4000, which is a little high for here
