Thank you that would be great I'm gonna start looking for Van Irs and sedan front beam I would like to find a 76-83 doner van it has the engine trans and torsion housing I want but if I can only get sedan that will be fine too. I'll start picking up parts and tubing as soon as I can I'm figureing $150.00-$200.00 in tubing but I'll need at least the fronr beam before I can start cutting and bending.
Also if you would Please can you do a little measuring for me I need the length of the front and rear trailing arms (Front) Center of beam to center of spindle (rear) center of torsion housing to center of stub axle and width of front beam inside shock tower toinside shock tower then width of rear torsion housing flange to flange thanks

I will keep my eyes open for a king/link front beam for ya. Posted Image The poker/memorial run is next weekend, bring a tape measure and we can get all the measurements you need. Also, if you are you lookin to make a street legal rig I have a few tips for ya to make it easy. We can talk more at the run.

Oh, and if you want, I will be towing the Beest to the run so I can throw the engine in the back of the truck.

I wasen't thinking I've got the mesurement's I needed, I have a glass body buggy sitting here in my yard must be my oldtimers kicking in LOL and yea that would be great if you could bring the engine. I have a couple of people to check with still for V dub parts but if I have to I will make all the suspension parts and go coil over I want to extend the front trailing arm's 4"X 1 3/4" will gain 6" of travel and the rear I wanna go 6X6 should gain 8"+ of travel, I want a lot of wheel travel and ground clearance.

I will build them out of DOM tubing the hard part is keeping everything squared up for aligning it up it's has to be checked and rechecked a few times. I can't guarantee they will hold up until I have tested them and trust me it they don't break or bend when I test them they will be good to go.

Hey Billy...

I heard Pick N Pull is having their half price sale this weekend so I checked on line and they have two 78 busses that are new on the yard! I believe the 091 trans was from 76-79. The downside is one is in Stockton and the other in Modesto. But, the two yards are only 30 miles apart. Since these trans go for $600+ used it would be worth the drive to get one for both of us at $100 each. (if they are there) So my question is...do ya feel like taking a ride Sun or Mon and possibly picking up both of these?

I would be up for the ride but The cash flow is the problem right now I'm going to start the build with just buying tubing once I have the tubing I need I'll build the frame and trailing arms and go from there but I also want to do some research and see if I can use a transverse set up.
I have already done a lot of power plant research and I'm eventually going to use a 2.2L chevy the later model is around 140hp and 150 ftlb of torque not sure when just yet but I'll probably build a vw first then later build another with the chevy.

Okay, Billy, time to start your own build thread. Posted Image With pics! Posted Image

I've played around with the idea of using older bus gear-reduction boxes in a buggy/crawler. When I was a kid my dad reversed the ring and pinion in our bus's transaxle so he could run the Corvair engine. Dunno how that works, but it seems possible to make 4wd...

I'll start a build thread when I start building Posted Image LOL as for reversing the ring gear there were 2 corvair engines one was reverse rotation (hince the need to flip the ring gear and carrier) and the other was not I don't know why one was reversed and one was not, there is also a honda with reverse rotation. then as you mentioned there is the idea of building a VW 4wd some of the vanagons were 4wd so it is very possable to build a 4wd VW buggy. But I'm going to build as long of wheel travel 2wd buggy as I can theres nothing like going as fast as you can in the dirt . My nephew is talking about wanting one of my chassis to build a rock crawler though. as soo as I figure out how to get my drawings into my PC I'll post it up.

At a recent VW show, I saw what would make a sweet VW crawler. BUT...its such a rare car, just the running gear would cost a small fortune. Check out the Volkswagen Schwimmwagen!! Yes...Swimming Car Posted Image The one I saw was restored to showroom condition and it was very cool to see up close how it was designed!

yea that would be expencive but it only has 4 wd in 1st and rev and I wouldn't want to distroy a car like that. Some cars are meant for modifications and some are meant for restoration

I think I've seen one of these before...
Was there a version of the VW "thing" that was 4 wheel drive?
