I have a ? ... I have an 81 toyota and it smokes bad. It's either the head or pistion rings. Is there a way to tell what the problem is or just fix what I think the problem could be? ( Probably cheaper to run it till it dies and replace the motor, but I'm still learning and not sure what's wrong) Any help would be nice!!!

what color smoke?you could do a compression check on it and then add a little bit of oil into the sparg plug holes and see if the #s go up,will tell you if it is the rings

well I had a friend help me compression check it I think he did it wrong because the numbers were really low. It's bettwen 90 and even got a number 64 for the compression. The spark plugs are black again, and the smoke is a blue color. I'm more concerned that it filters into the cab.

Are you dizzy :'( if not it's not in the cab, I would get a book and check on that # for your cyl, I know a sbc, is 150 blue smoke is oil.blk plug is to lean, the 64 might be your problem, is this a 4cyl if so maybe 90 is good?

yah it's a 4cyl. and it use to run hot but that was mostly to do with the radiator which needed to be replaced. It does smell sweet, and I'm pretty sure the smoke is blue at least it looks like it to me but I don't know much could be my imagination, who knows. :) I know since I've got this truck it's one problem after another and has cost me over 7,000 to fix it and it's still broke. I'm working on the 5th 22r motor, the truck has been risen from the grave so many times it's starting to be unbelievable that's what I get for wanting an old truck i guess.
