So I went camping at/near Tamarak last weekend and I took the Burbon with the family. I had never been and got up there after dark and we made a wrong turn and went down a nasty (for the burbon) and narrow road. I ended up getting stuck and broke a front passenger CV. I'm not sure if it's the bigger motor that I'm not used to wheeling with or if I was just too rough. I've got 415ft-lbs to play with. I didn't think I was being that aggressive either. Would you say that the 3/4 ton CVs are pretty weak or I just need to wheel more carefully. I'm used to my XJ which has half the torque. From what I can tell, all the broke was the cage that holds the steel balls in their chanels. I'll know more when I get in there to replace it.

On another note, it was really cheep to fix. Napa had the whole axle assembly for 90 bucks. I'll post up some carnage pics when I replace it this weekend.
I drive an 87' XJ.

I would have to say that there are several factors against you in that thing...1. Extreme weight 2. Extreme torque 3. Probably an old axle that has never been used much except freewheeling and 4. A CV that is not to much bigget than an s10 one...But age was probably the biggest issue...they usually hold up fairly well to the torque unless your an animal and trying to break it! :-

No, same thing, except it has a boot to hold the grease in an open knuckle. I think birfield is a brand name for toyota cvs.

Oh man it was really fun! I'm working really hard now to get back into a house so I can have my Jeep back and possibly get my dream project.

I got it all put back together. It was really easy. It's actually pretty beefy. The shafts are about 1.25" in diameter.

hmph, now I get it, always wondered why having a cv boot torn was such a big deal.
