My buddys left front tire is making a scraching and grinding noise at 40mph and above and some times at lower speeds it will rattle. I told him it could be the wheel bearings so he replaced both inner and outer wheel bearing and it is not his cv axle, or breaks. Could it have anything to do with his hub?

Is the noise constant or intermitent?

Does it get louder as he goes faster, then quiet as he slows?

Does it happen only when he's going straight?

If it happens when he turns, does it get louder or quieter while turning?

Is there any 'popping' sounds, or just scraping-grinding?

Is there any wobble or vibration in the steering wheel associated with the noise at any speed?

this is what my buddy said...

the noise is semy constant, but once it starts it usually doesnt stop uless im under 40mph but the noise stays the same when i seed up and doesnt get any louder, it will make a popping and scraching sound when making right turns, when i replaced the wheel bearing i didnt replace the races. There is no wobble in driving but i can feel it at my feet when it is making the noise.

This started to sound like something that happened to me a while back, it turned out that the plastic inner fender would get pushed down from the wind and hit the tire, then it would spring back after I slowed down, so every time I would stop and look I wouldn't see anything rubbing.

Yeah, you pretty much solved your own mystery... you'll have to start over with the wheel bearings and get those right before you can continue, assuming that doesn't turn out to be the cause of the problem.

Do it right this time and get another new set of bearings AND races... you know the rest.
