hello
I am new here and would like some input as to what direction I should go with my project.
What I have is an 82 toy with 17k miles on it, and no body. I spent some time this summer collecting stuff for my build,
like(5) 33/13.50/15 baja claws,(4) 10x15 rims, HF tire mounter (works great, I plan on using airsoft pellets for ballancing) a full bushing kit, and oh yeah a hobart 140 mig.

At first I planned on making a body for it, then I thought of throwing a cherokee body on it, then I was at the junk yard and saw a few wrangler tubs, I did some measuring and the tub from the doors back will fit with minimal fab work, allowing me to use the factory rollbar .......so I just dont know

I mounted the 33's an first intended to keep it low as possable with maybe a inch or two shackle lift, then I looked into rears up front and chevys...........

then just this week I did some trading and got an 87 4x4 extra cab with no motor, so I got lots of extra parts :D
I want somthing different and I like the look of the flatfender jeeps and fj40s
this is my first real 4x build so any help would be great

with all that talk im guessing you dont live were you have to smog anything .So here goes if you have a compleate minus engine 87 toyota extra cab why not swap your 82 front axle in and engine. Or put the 87 cab on the 82 frame (you didnt say if the 82 was a long or short bed ) build a flat bed keep the 87 rear axle its wider and has bigger brakes ,run the 87 trans cause its stronger than the 4 speed or 5 speed thats in your 82 ,get a duel case adapter you will already have a spare case to use sounds easy to me.WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO MESS UP A TOYOTA BY PUTING A JEEP ON TOP OF IT (w00t)
to many projects and not enough time or To much time and not enough money.

to piss off the jeep guys. B)
but seriously I'm cheap and I would like to get some dirt under my tires before they rot away.
my idea was to build a body similar to a fj40, or somthing that could be heated (all I have is a dash and a floor board), that was untill I towed the 87 to my house today.
can you even put a newer body on an older frame?

FJ40 body parts are expensive, unless you know something that I don't...I would stick with the toyota pickup...you can build a nice rig and have an almost unlimited supply of parts available at junk yards and what not. I agree with toyoder...if you wanted a jeep you should have bought a jeep, but dont taint the toyota name by jeepifying it

I am one of those odd people that has a jeep and a toyota and wheel both.... I have a 1980 toyota short bed that has been my wheeling project last 6months or so....anyways my $0.02 is that you forget the body and just build a buggy or truggy out of it. Think....rollcage lol

fj40 parts are expensive thats why I was thinking about building somthing like a fj40
now that I have the 87 I think that it wouldn't make much sense to do all that fabrication when I have a clean body to work with
hey rsc71 is the 89/82 offroad only?
what I meant to ask is can I put the 87 body on the 82 and have it street lagal with out too many hassles?
I would like to make her street legal

this is what I am working with

if hes in chico and wants it to be smoged he cant use the 82 engine anyways and the extra cab mounts are going to not line up and he would have to have a real real small bed if the 82 frame was a short bed
to many projects and not enough time or To much time and not enough money.

I think you should use a IH frame, Dodge rear axle, Ford front, Chevy springs, CJ tub, Yota drivetrain and throw some Zuki seats in it for good measure. This way you have something for everyone. (w00t)

Seriously, though. I agree that the shortest path to actually driving something would be swapping the axle into the 87, part out the rest of the 82 and get a couple used 87 motors. Run one while you're remanufacturing the other.
