Are there anyway to get a 700r4 to quit shifting out on its own. If so what do I need to do other then putting a 3spd in it

Have you tried adjusting the "kick-down" cable...if you move it in a few clicks it might help...dont get to carried away though or it will really shift funny...

so you have 1st 2nd, drive, and overdrive in a 700r4 right? I'm not sure what you mean about getting it to not shift up on it's own. If you put an automatic in 1st it won't shift till you move the lever right? Or are you having problems with it shifting down too soon, say from drive to 2nd?

So will this make it stay in low gear when it is in low gear and not shift into second until I want it to.

part of the problem putting in an auto in a rock crawler is they can pick up speed when you let off the gas going down hill even keeping it in 1st,went to Chappie with a guy that had a 700r and he was riding his brake the way down..had to pull over 3-4 times becuase of his brakes heating up.so from talking to other people that put an auto in they change it to a Manual? shift body to aleviate that problem.not sure it is what you are asking about.I am sure someone has better info on this..or better info can be found on the web somewere

if your gear'ed right it shouldent rev up like that and if it still revs up and wants to shift the put a 4 to 1 crawl ratio in the TC or put lower gears in it
(Caution) I have an 05 wrangler and I'm not afraid to use it

OK, I'm confused now. I thought the problem was it's kicking down from Drive to 2nd before fister13 wants it to.

If that is indeed the problem, it sounds like the kickdown isn't working right. Certainly the manual valve body will help that, because you'll have to move the lever to get it to shift, up or down.

Regarding the auto and compression braking, my TH400 works fine, as long as I have it in first gear (and low-low range helps a lot). In second or third it will freewheel. Is the 700R4 like that?

I have an '92 Olds Bravada (AWD S-10 4 door) with the 700 trans with over 240,000 miles on it and I had the same problem for awhile. I would try to adjust the kickdown cable or even drain and service it (fluid and filter). Mine started shifting alot better after I did both.
