I picked up the winch today and am very happy with it, bloody bargain. The plan now is to clean it up and check it out (quick service), spool it with 150' of Dux 75 rope and mount it up to a new bull bar which i am going to have to make. The winch is going to be hard wired into my cab with a power switch (toggle switch), a green push button for spooling out and a red push button for spooling in.

The main part of my bullbar that will house the winch will be made from 8mm steel plate (approx 1/3")

anyway back to the winch for now. here are some pictures.

How much didja pay, if I may be so bold as to ask?

Also, just wondering, :read: what part of a winch is biohazardous?

Keep it up with the great pics!

Heya, NZ ..

Great find ...

I have the model just before the 8274, the 8000 and I just put 3/8 inch synthetic rope on it, and always thought I could put 150 feet ... but found I could only put 125 feet. If Dux 75 is 3/4 inch ( ie .75 inch) you'll put even less.

Here is the very best prices I found on quality synthetic rope ... almost 1/4 the price Warn and Ramsey charge for the SAME manufacturer's products.

Yea it was $800NZ which is about $475US.
The Biohazard bag has spare parts in it (seals, etc) no idea why is has that written on it though.

The winch rope I will be getting is only 5/16, however, it is an overbraid and thus very strong, As the splice the minimum breaking load is 6750kgs (14,881 lbs) and unspliced miniumum breaking load is 7500kgs (16534 lbs)

It's also quite cheap, 150' with eyes spliced on each end is only $400NZ ($243US, so about the same price for you guys but i dont have to ship this rope as the guy in only 15mins down the road from me)

Here is a link to the rope.
http://www.4wdbits.c...x?productID=247

I am also getting a Hawse fairlead off the guy
http://www.4wdbits.c...x?productID=166

Today i am going to mock up the main part of the bar to see what my approach angle is link, then next week i will go and pick up the sheet of 8mm plate steel.

Well i mocked up the basic shape of the main part of the bar today. I am pretty happy with the look of it and the approach angle. I also think that the bar will be plenty strong enough.

On the pictures below the main parts that are missing are: angled front plate, tube for the sides and top, and all the little strengthening triangles that will be welded between parts to make it more rigid (12 triangles that are approx 2"x2". All the joints in the plate will be fully welded on both inside and out.

Here are the pics....

And here is a rough picture of where the bars will go.

Ok, the main front part of the bar is all welded up now. Just needs grinding down and fitting up (bolts for chassis and winch).

then I will start on the tube work for the sides and top.

I am by no means an expert welder but I think the welds are going to be plenty strong enough and look OK. Whats your opinion?
A bit anoying when you know that the welder is at its maximum capibility. (240V, 180A at its highest settings running 0.8mm wire)

anyway, little chat, lots of pics......

Welds look just fine.

I think you need to make it stronger. Not!

Very cool!

From what I can see, the welds look good. I guess I don't understand the design completely. Why is the box so tall? Is it to protect the winch? I guess I'll have to wait and see the finished product.

Hard to explain Eric but....... basically so that i can get the winch up as high as possible so that i have a better approach angle aswell making it easier to winch over banks also remember that a hi mount has to mount with the bolts facing forwards, not down like a low mount.
the angled plate is just a bash plate that will get a few holes cut out of it to lighten things up.

so far its approx 80 lbs

I got it all ground up today. Looks good I think, just need to fill in a couple of marks in the side with the welder to make it nice and smooth. and then will sort my tubing out next week and then once it is all together it will go to be sandblasted.

Talking about bolts now, are 6 (3 into each chassis rail) 9/16 (might be next size up from 9/16 actually), grade 5 bolts (metric grade 8.8) going to be strong enough?

I can't really answer that question without knowing enough about your vehicles frame. On my XJ's bumper I used four grade 8s on each side which hold the brackets on. The bumper attaches to the brackets using just two 1/2" grade 8s. But the XJ doesn't have a real frame so it had to be spread out. If you're Nissan has a real frame, I'd say you'll be fine.
