Today marks the day that rwilley and I start the Beast II build. We rolled the frame in the shop and got started by moving the rear leaf spring hangers back 4 inches so the FJ60 rear springs could be put on.

Me and mwilley went to L.A. yesterday and got an Fj60 full floater rear axle and an Fj60 front axle with disk brakes. I'll be able to use the high steer I got from Toyoder.

I got the front axle and a semi floater rear for $200. We were at Spector Of Road and the had one Fj60 full floater so sense we were there and it was there I got it. I cost $400 though. But it's a full floater. :hyper:

Ditto. Just post up and you'll have more free labor than you can afford to buy pizza for. :-

I was thinking to propose to Rick Péwé at 4Wheel & Off-Road mag that he let a "group reader-built" rig go on the Ultimate Adventure. All the time you either see rigs built by sponsor shops (like the Poison Spyder Customs rig), or single-reader-built rigs like my brother's. I thought it might be cool to have a group of builders (like us) build up some rig and take it on the UA just to see how it fares and compares. We could either get sponsors or take pride in the fact that it's all built and resourced by regular Joes. And the cost (and credit) would be distributed across many wallets, instead of just one or two (or a corporate expense account).

But then I spend too much time dreaming about stuff like this. :P

No with 3 cruisers I'm trying to keep things kinda uniform so I'm staying with 35s on everything.

Got some more work done on the Beast II. On the before picture you can see that the FJ60 spring pin does not fit in the FJ40 hangers. Allong with getting the lip on the pin turned down, and drilling out the hole to bolt the pin on the inside of the frame, the hanger needed to be moved out in order for the pin to fit properly. All the was needed to do was to grind down the rivits on the bottom part of the mount and move it over to the correct place, and weld the mount together and to the frame. Hopefull the before and after pictures will illistrate what I am trying to get across. The current status is that the leaf springs are ready to be put on the frame, and work needs to be done to the FJ60 Full-Floating Rear axle.

Cool, nice work. There's always something new and different, isn't there? Please keep up with the pics and narrative!

Today consisted of getting the axle to mount up to the springs. The spring perches that we got from Specter Off-Road were welded to the top of the axles, instead of the stock bottom mounted perches, which will give the FJ40 a 6 1/2" lift, not accounting for the bigger spring-pack size and 2 1/2" Shackles. The FJ40 frame is narrower than the FJ60 frame so you can see from the first picture that the perches need to be mounted more toward the inside of the axle. Hence, the old spring perches need to be taken off in order for the U-Bolts to be put on. (When the leaf over is done to an FJ40 axle there is no need to take the old perches off, it can help keep the U-Bolts straight) By the end of the night we were able to put the FJ60 Full-Floating Rear Axle on the FJ60 Rear Springs that are mounted to the FJ40 Body. The Axle will need to be cleaned up a little more and painted, replacing the seals as well as the outer bearings. Then it will be time to work on the front.

It is getting around to that time again that rwilley and I will be able to start working on this project again. With the kitchen and rwilley's cruiser being down this project took the back burner, however, it is going to start being put together. We are at the point where we are going to scrap the idea of putting coils on it, and just going to longer leafs. We are looking for leaf springs that 3-inches wide, and longer than the FJ40 springs. It would be nice to find some springs from the front of an FJ60, but I think what it is going to come down to is going to pick n' pull and measuring leaf springs. I am hoping to find some 1/2 ton leaf springs that are about 2-3" longer than the FJ60 springs. I will have measurement and maybe some of you guys can provide a little insite. Currently we have the rear FJ60 full floater on, and we got the crack in the T-Case welded up, as soon as we can the front suspension and FJ60 Front hooked up it will be time to get this thing together.
