I know that I usually use my Pinzgauer 712 for offroading but I also have a 98 Durango. I run with the SWDOC (South West Durango Owners Club). I finally wore out those D****MED BFG AT"s 32 X 11.50 X 15(will never use those again). I did go with the BFG MT's in 33 X 10.50 X 15 so far they are nice. I like the look and they actually grab the road, won't get a chance to see them offroad until June 3rd as I will be out in the Pinz the next few weeks.

I had nothing but terrible performance from the AT's. The first day offroad I had to take one back as the outer lugs just peeled off. The sidewalls had something like 20 cracks developing in them. I get absolutely no traction with them even on dry blacktop. I had to be careful taking off from the lights to keep them from slipping. My wife always accused me of driving too fast until she drove it and they did the same for her. When I had them offroad I had no better luck with traction at a variety of pressures. I believe one of the biggest problems was the width. I don't do a lot of sand and they were just too wide for the weight of the truck. I will say that I could not wear them out, so if a long lasting tire with no traction is what you are after they sure would be my first choice. I know a lot of guys and gals around here like them on their jeeps. I have to assume that they perform differently for those folks or they just don't wheel like I do but that does not explain the lack of traction on the road. My kids miss sliding sideways into the driveway when we get home.

Looks pretty good! Hope it performs better than your AT's. I'm guessing with the narrower tread, it'll be better on road as far as traction, but when it comes to mud and sand it might dig in easier and get you buried. Keep your momentum!!

Here is another D with 33's but then this guy has just about everything in the catalogs. That is a Road Armor winch bumper with a 9.5K warn winch on a RT durango, ARB lockers, and on and on . . .

Here is the deserts of AZ not much chance of running into mud and the sand is mostly decomposed granite. You can ride a bike through the stuff. The best thing is I will have to take it offroad to find out how it performs , yet another excuse to go out wheeling.

i'm 99% sure you could get 31s as a factory option on durangos.. 33s i doubt would be too hard to fit..

you are correct the 31's were stock on my Durango. When I went to the 3" suspension lift the largest tire size Rancho listed as fitting was a 32 X 11.50 which is what I went with. After using them I found that if I went narrower I could go taller without major rub issues. The 33's will not fit on a stock Durango without serious rubbing problems. The Durango forums have covered most of the tire size combinations. A lot of owners have reported rubbing with tires larger than 31 (well those who really use them). With the 32 11.50's I got some minor rubbing but mostly because of the width. There is a guy here in PHX that runs a 3" suspension and 3" body lift with 36" tires. I have talked to him and he fully regrets it. The truck will not track on the highway and is a miserable ride. He does not use it offroad and did the mods for the looks.

Nice set of tires on your rig. The rig ain't bad either.

I had a set of 35/12.50/15 BFG ATs on my cruiser for a while. I thought they had good traction on rocks and snow. The only thing was when I aired them down to 6 lbs in the snow they keeped coming off the bead. :'(

Ive had BFG AT"s and they worked pretty well for me. I think they were 31's, i cant remember i sold them with my vehicle a year ago, but i had to really try to get them to slide on the road. I basically had to burn out. I think they work ok, but if you are doing heavy wheeling MT's all the way :headbanger:

Ten bazillion people that run that tire must think they're good. I'd probalby put them on a street rig :D

The question is not how many have the tires on their rigs but how many put them on. The auto manufacturers put them on because they are inexpensive, last a long time, and make the consumer think he is getting a real offroad rig. I wonder how many of those who went out to get tires (and actually used their rigs) bought them. Of those who bought them on their own, did they get them because that is what they were after or was it because that is what they saw on the new H2/H3 vehicles. I have seen people get pretty good results with them offroad but they sure could have gotten a much better tire. The other big factor is the truck. I am sure you know that a tire that works well on one rig will preform miserably on another. I still believe that it was the combination of the stiff suspension, larger (relative to truck) engine, and light vehicle that caused my troubles with them. So far I have to work to get the BFG MT's to turn on blacktop, thats a good start now for the trail.
