Well i have an 02 xterra with 305/70/16 my suv is a v6 with a 5 speed and i was wondering what size gears to put in it. i want close to the stock ratio or maybe a lil lower thast it cause this is my dail driver and i want to drive it all over the place on the freeway at high speeds i have done a gibson exhaust cold air intake and throddle body spacers i was told it has 4.36 gears in it now so i was thinkin maybe 4.56maybe 4.88 put they may be to low for me i want to beable to drive on the freeway like 90mph not problem or maybe ill do some more performance mods to get back the lost power for the tires that are 3 inches taller than stock and where to find a locker for the rear and front i was think mechanical locker does anybody know of any more performance mods out there besides a supercharger thanks alot

well you could put new headders on for performance. i would think 4.88's sould be fine, if you want to be extra safe and know that it will be good on the road i would go for 4.56.

personally i would only ever use ARB Airlockers. but others might know something good.

Well a 305 tire is probably somewhere between a 33 and 35. If you've got 4.36 gears now, you're not going to see much change going to 4.56 being only a 5% change. I'd recommend 4.88s, especially if you decide to go to a bigger tire. 4.88s would mean a 12% reduction so you can figure what your RPMs will be at those highway speeds.

I would choose 4.88's for an additional reason - increased tire size means greater rolling resistance as well as a substantial weight gain.

But thats coming from a guy trying to keep the squirrels from puking in his 4 banger (w00t)

As far as finding gears give Randy's Ring & Pinion a call, they are very helpful.

Well I finally called nissan and they told me i have 4.90 gears so i order the 5.142 gears for front and rear and steerin enhancement setup too with a idle arm brace and a 180 amp alternator. Im waitin to get my winch bumper to get it powder coated but im still looking for mechanical lockers wheres NZ at and Im lookin at a mile marker winch 9000lbs brand new from factor but i dunno bout it. Anyone have any info one these winches? What are some good offroad lights? I like the ones that are black with the blue lense but need to gater more info im thinking bout 2 for my bumper 4 for the top and 2 for rear bumper to back up with or some a lil more smaller for the back. :rules:

Ok im here, Sorry to say but the guy i was talking to, after looking at it a lot, couldnt find a way to get the mechanical locker into your diff (he was seeing if it could be modified slightly) sorry about that.

as far as offroad lighting goes. Lightforce is the best, but you guys dont have it in the US. If you could get those have a look at my 4x4 as it shows the setup i will be using. (the setup i am getting will light up the night sky!)
the other lights that arent bad are the Hella Rallye 4000. i have a couple of them hanging off the front of my GU (the other patrol) and they are pretty good saying i only have 2 of them)

now mile marker, if you arent going to use it in competition, it is bloody great!

Go online, harborfreight.com.

So why are you re-gearing only to go down 3 tenths of a ratio? Seems like a waste to me. It will probably increase your RPMs <200 on the freeway.

may sound like a waste to you eric as the jeeps came out with much different gearing to nissans, i have 4.3's now and will only got to 4.6's for 35's (came standard with 31's)

I don't see how it's any different than a Jeep, ford or anything that has a differential. A nissan or a closely related Toyota came with deeper gears (higher numberically) because their motors make less power, run at higher rpm and they're efficient enough to run at those higher rpms and still have good gas mileage. Jeeps with 4 cylinders often come with 4.10s which is not much different than 4.30.

I guess it's a common thing many to be afraid to gear one's rigs lower than 5. Something about shear strength and a notion they'll be turning too many rpm down the freeway. I had this talk with Jer. You have to look at the tire/gear ratio chart that's pinned in general 4x4. I suggested Jer go 5.13s or even 5.38s being he wants 37-38 tires. With 38s and 5.38s he'll be turning OEM rpm down the hwy. I've been driving around my XJ with stock gearing, 3.55 on 35-36s for a while now and it can be done, but it should be a lot lower for the tire size. Yeah 5.13 will be better than 4.90, but the amount of performance gained will be very small. I may be blowing smoke out of my bottom being I've never driven a regeared 4x4, but on paper and this article seems to back up my reasoning. If the front axle I'm getting went as deep as my D70, I would seriously consider 6.17 because I want big tires behind a motor that isn't a serious powerhouse. However it has OD so I can still drive it down the freeway below 3000 rpm.

I pull 3500 rpm going 80 but its reall quiet. I dunno if it just my type of motor a lil bit of a high rpm or not ??????? And the guys from 4x4parts where i order the gears told me i would notice a bigg difference and tried to get me to buy lower tranny gears also

HF sells some cheapo lights that are pretty nice, they are all metal casing with a glass lense and are fully sealed.
I had them on my samurai and they worked great only cost like $11 each

your not quite right Eric. using the formula on that page

tire diameter = (MPH * gear ratio *336) / RMP

in my case

tire diameter = (70 * 4.3* 336) / 3000 = 33.71"

that is what i have now, more than enough power off the line and i can do up to 80 miles an hour without a problem. but also when in 4 low i can still crawl at very low speeds (idle)

now replace the 4.3 ratios with 4.6

(70 * 4.6 * 336) / 3000 = 36.064" so i can run a 36" tire with 4.6 gears and still do 70 MPH at 3000 rpm. which is just perfect.

now i take your point Eric if you want to make your vehicle more powerful and have a slower clawl/engine braking (than the stock standard car) then yes you are rignt, but mine is just right now with 4.3's and 33" tires

also accorfing to the chart that is pinned in general 4x4, at 65MPH i do about 2900RPM so i should be between 4.56 and 4.88. so again the 4.6 is fine for 35's
